How To | Take Blog Worthy Photos Using An iPhone
Around 85% of the photos on my blog have been taken on my iPhone. Shocker right? You see a lot of bloggers saying what camera they own and take photos on, but you honestly don't always need one to take good, blog-worthy images. I have a few tips and tricks to help you take amazing photos using just your iPhone!
Lighting
This is absolutely key to taking a good photo, no matter what you are taking it on! Natural light is your best friend, so find somewhere that is close to a window but not direct sunlight, as this can cast shadows and give a yellow tinge, especially since phones tend to be a bit grainer than cameras. Another thing with lighting is to never use flash as this too can produce a yellow light and completely ruin the image.
No Zoom
Don't zoom EVER! It will pixelate and make all your photos look grainy, which is pretty impossible to edit out. Instead, move yourself nearer or move the product or whatever your are photographing closer to the lens and this will keep the quality.
Focus
Did you know that you can tap on the screen to focus? It is so useful, especially if you are after that perfect blur to the backdrop. This can also help to adjust the brightness of the photo, as you are saying what the focus should be on, therefore where the best light should be.
Cleaning
Make sure you wipe over the lens before you take a photo. Day to day use of your phone means it can accumulate dirt and dust on the lens, especially since it's made of glass and it sticks to it! So if your test images looks a little fuzzy, give your lens a clean - so simple but really helps.
Editing
There is a lot of stigma about editing blog or instagram photos and while I don't agree with over-editing, a few little changes can turn a good photo into an amazing one. Stick to just altering the brightness, contrast, highlight and shadow and maybe the warmth and saturation if you feel the photo need it. Less is defiantly more when editing and I tend to just use the Instagram editor if I'm on my phone or the Windows editor on my laptop. Don't think you need to buy editing software because you really don't!
Angles
Once you have your set up, try a few different angles to see what shows the product off to its finest. What may not look that amazing from above, will look completely different from the side. Also, by working with your angles, it can make your blog and it's photography look more creative and unique.
Take In Bulk
If you have a good set up and the lighting is the best it has ever been, take a bulk load of photos and store them for when you need them - especially good in winter when the lighting isn't as good. Also, take a load of photos of the same thing, but like I said before, try all the angles and use props etc to find what works best.
Shape
If you know your are going to be uploading straight to instagram, use the square setting for the camera. This means you don't have to crop it down and loose half of the photo or loose any of the quality. Plus, it saves you so much time too!
There you have it, my quick and easy tips on how to get the best, blog worthy photos using just your iPhone and it just shows, you don't need a 'fancy' camera to get good quality.
