This is the first book by Anthony O'Neill that I have read and it certainly wont be the last as I was hooked on this from the first page! The story follows Cat Thomas who has recently relocated to beautiful Edinburgh after unfortunate events in the USA. While she find the perfect home, it soon becomes apparent that her upstairs neighbour is anything but. Soon her life falls apart again from the upset of her apparent unreasonable neighbour and lack of sleep, Cat feels she has no choice but to take good friend, Anges' invitation. Cat is such a likeable and relatable character and you can really relate to the situation she is in and the lengths she goes to, to try and resolve it.
While this does come under the horror genre, it is more of a psychological horror and not filled with gory horror scenes - luckily for me - but still keep some of the expected creepy scenes which make the story. It definitely keep me wanting more and each chapter flows easily into one another making it so easy to read in one sitting! The writing style also makes it incredibly easy to picture both the setting if you haven't been to Edinburgh and also the characters themselves which I think is what helps Cat to be such a relatable character.
The Devil Upstairs keeps you guessing though-out as to what is actually happening and has a satisfying ending while still leaving it open should Anthony O'Neill wish to create a sequel - which I really hope happens as I want to know what happens next!
